Control before protection
Scott Blair's approach to protection dog training in Scotland starts a long way from anything that looks like protection. It starts with obedience, temperament and the relationship between you and your dog. A dog who cannot settle, cannot recall and cannot be switched off has no business doing protection work.
The same applies to finding a dog. A protection dog for the family is only worth having if the temperament is right — calm, social and reliable at home first. The goal is a stable, social family dog who happens to have clarity and control under pressure, never an aggressive one. Safety, honesty about what a dog is suited to, and the bond between handler and dog sit at the centre of everything.

Obedience First
Nothing protection-related happens until everyday obedience is genuinely reliable — recall, position, settling and control around distraction.
Temperament Assessment
An honest look at a dog before anything begins. Confidence, stability and how the dog handles pressure decide whether protection work is appropriate.
Neutrality Around People
A dog who is relaxed with visitors, children, shopkeepers and passers-by. Deterrence comes from presence and control, not suspicion of everyone.
Structured Protection Work
Protection built in clear, measured stages, pitched to the individual dog and to what your family actually needs — never rushed.
Handler Skill
You are trained alongside your dog. A protection dog is only as good as the person on the other end of the lead.
Living With It
The training has to hold up in your home, on your street and on ordinary walks — not just in a session with the trainer.
Suitability
Which dogs it suits
Protection work is not right for every dog, and we would rather say so early than push a dog into something they are not built for. What matters is a confident, healthy dog with a settled temperament, a genuine willingness to work with their handler, and no underlying anxiety driving their behaviour.
Where a dog is not suited — or not yet suited — there is usually still plenty of value in everyday obedience training, or in work on reactivity first. Foundations come before anything else.

Can you help me find a protection dog for my family?+
Yes. As well as training your own dog, Scott helps families source and match a suitable, well-trained family protection dog. Every dog is temperament-tested first, and the right match depends on your household, lifestyle and what you actually need from the dog — so finding one is always a careful, considered process rather than a stock list.
Is a protection dog safe around my family and children?+
That is the starting point, not an afterthought. A protection dog worth having is calm, sociable and completely reliable at home — a family dog first. If temperament and control are not right, protection work does not go ahead, and a dog is never matched to a family where the fit is not right.
Will this training make my dog aggressive?+
No. Protection work is built on obedience, clarity and control, not on winding a dog up. The aim is a settled, neutral dog who can switch on when asked and switch off just as quickly.
What breeds are suitable for protection dog training?+
It depends far more on the individual dog than the breed. Temperament, confidence, health and the dog's ability to stay calm under pressure matter most, and that is assessed dog by dog before any protection work begins — whether you are training your own dog or being matched with one.
